Spam prevention tips: 10 blog comments you should deny

A quick post for today - here's a list of 10 comments that you may not realise are really posted by spammers. They appear on so many blogs that they are definitely spam.

  1. This is my first time posting so I wanted to take a moment and say hello to everyone! - There are lots of comments like this - much of the time, the commenter says "hi" on several different posts and also says they are glad to join the "forum". I guess some spammers can't even be bothered to adjust their message to suit the medium.
  2. I've been looking around (your site name) and actually am impressed by the exceptional content material here. I work the nightshift at my job and it really gets boring. I've been coming here for the past couple nights and reading. I simply needed to let you know that I've been enjoying what I've seen and I look ahead to reading more. - Actually not too bad, but this one pops up on too many blogs to be legit. That, and its obvious spammy link in the URL field, pushes this comment into the spam queue.
  3. In 1959 phentermine first received approval from the FDA as an appetite suppressing drug. Phentermine hydrochloride then became available in the early 1970s. (etc...) - Hmm, what does that have to do with any of my posts? Not much!
  4. Hopefully, my personal owner will give me treats on that day. I cannot wait! - Quite an amusing one, this. Was the writer pretending to be a dog?
  5. Hello! kebbabe interesting kebbabe site! - Possibly an attempt to bypass anti-spam controls that look for comments that use the same phrases as known spammers. The result is that the comment is just gibberish, although it was quite an interesting choice of words.
  6. Must admit that you are one of the best bloggers I ever saw. Thanks for posting this informative and useful article. - Hey, that's nice! Oh wait, who posted it? A user by the name of "porno". Spam.
  7. In truth, immediately i did understand it. But after re-reading I think i comprehend - Wow, thanks for that! I have faith in your ability to write legitimate comments... that don't even make sense. Immediately you understood it? Then you re-read and you now comprehend? I thought you understood the first time...
  8. it was very interesting to read. I want to quote your post in my blog. It can? And you et an account on Twitter? - Another nonsense comment, with typos galore - "It can?" should be "I can?", or really, "Can I?" Then, we have "et an account", which should be "get an account"... either way, that sentence doesn't make much sense.
  9. Hello friends, I am looking astral projection techniques, if possible easy and with rapid results. Would any of you know any or could recommend a trustworthy website? Thanks! - Yet more junk that has nothing to do with my site.
  10. I like that you think. Thank you for share very - This person didn't even bother to finish their comment. Sigh.
In summary - blogs need to stop approving spam comments!

Another couple of sneaky spam comments to watch out for:

Comment is more or less an exact copy of a previous comment.

Comment is copied from a related wikipedia page :-(

You do have to admit some of the spam comments give a bit of chuckle :) I agree with you that bloggers need to stop approving spam comments especially if they care about the quality of their blog's content. One tip I read for determining whether a comment is spam if in doubt is to run the comment through Google. If it shows up on the search more than once chances are very good that it's comment spam. I hate comment spam!

John - absolutely. Blog Report - I use Google if I'm unsure, but most of them I can see a mile off.

I just received another spam comment on Zen Working: "Amiable post and this mail helped me alot in my college assignement. Gratefulness you for your information."

Well at least these spammers have made an attempt to leave some kind of comment !On a blog I used to run I became tired of detailing spam left in the middle of the night with only anchor text linking to websites selling certain products that are aimed at the adult market. Another one I used to get was "I thank you for your wonderful post I will consider linking to it from my website" Yeah, right. Flattery seems to be their weapon of choice

Hey Lyn. I just received another one:

i have enjoyed reading thank for sharing your story Greeting.

Most of the ones I get don't make a lot of sense.

Personally, I hate comments that do not relate to the article that was posted. I like the one that says, I come here all the time and read your content all the time. It has nothing to do with the article you post but, it still shows you that the person "might have read something" on your website.

Thanks for commenting, Mandeep. Yours is the first real comment this blog has had in over a week. I've had an alarming volume of spam comments recently.
