Is Twitter the new StumbleUpon/Digg? 10 viewpoints

< 10 signs your Twitter etiquette could be improved | Twitter | 10 reasons why Twitter sucks >

I asked 10 of my Twitter followers a simple question:

Is retweeting the new Stumble/Digg?

Special thanks go to DaivRawks for pointing me at this post on Sitepoint: Twitter joins Digg and Slashdot in sending server-crashing traffic

Below are the answers I received. Add yours in a comment!

  1. disassociated: potentially. You'd need a fair few followers who were prepared to retweet (stumble/digg) posts tho. Twit = new everything tho :)
  2. TurnipOfPower: Twitter is the new RSS, not sure about the new Digg.
  3. cravenjade: Definitely. One high profile tweet can launch a blog! Its quicker and is more accessible to the everyday blogger.
  4. Rarst: is running around, stuffing links in people's faces something new? not really
  5. kirstenl4w: I never see much about Digg or Stumble anymore, so yes on RT. Twit is conversational, Digg and SU not so much. RT better!
  6. LeighI: Yes and No. People are less likely to RT than a digg or thumbup, but RT by the right /enough ppl the traffic could be similar.
  7. outofit: I don't think so. I never got much traffic or interest on Digg but Stumble still sends waves of visitors from time to time.
  8. 88michael: I think it is. But people will still definitely use Digg & Stumble. Retweeting is similar, another way to share great content.
  9. Monnie: It's annoying when you're following everyone that retweets the same thing - wouldn't say its the new Digg though.
  10. kristarella: Yes. I've never really gotten into Stumble/Digg, but I follow links in tweets all the time and will retweet if I love it.

Thanks for your answers - now let's hear some more in the comments! Which answer is closest to your own? Or do you have your own views?

I mentioned this on another post last week. I think that eventually someone will come up with a Digg (voting) service for Tweets.

Then a kick ass real time web search engine..

I never look at digg or stumbleupon, they were both something I signed up with and lost interest within a week.

Twitter is fun and I'm discovering a lot of blogs that I like.
Twitter will be deciding the top 100 bloggers from now on IMO.

I'm not convinced yet although I like Twitter very much.

I think a lot of Twitterers are just there for the tweeting and not necessarily to follow links to blogs.

We'll see, I guess.

Thanks for the comments guys. :)

I'm sure retweeting has more power the more followers you have.

Here's a website a friend of mine setup which shows top Retweets, making it kinda like Digg for Twitter:

None of these is at all similar to the others.
One is a bookmarking service, one is a series of overlapping communities based in common interest and the other is twitter.
Maybe one day someone will produce something that conflates the ethos differences but what would be the point or purpose?
Why throw over uniqueness in favour of one size fits all bland utility?

Fewer login IDs? Less sites to check up on daily? There may be a tool out there for everyone, but I don't have time to check up on 20 or 30 different sites. I see your point, but I've found that the most valuable sites are those that my friends use - so that's Facebook, and Twitter. Those are the people who are most likely to read, comment and share my content.
