I'm a little worried about deleting a legitimate comment, so I check everything that's marked as spam. Thank you for this post. The spam that comes in to my blog is pretty obvious most of the time: Viagra, porn, etc ads.

I have gotten that occasional "Great point about ____ " and say the exact opposite of what I was stating. I have busted them once or twice, but it probably wasn't worth my time.

Thu, 27 Aug 2009 19:30:24 +0000 10 tips for identifying blog comment spam http://www.toptenblogtips.com/10-tips-for-identifying-blog-comment-spam#c3679 http://www.toptenblogtips.com/10-tips-for-identifying-blog-comment-spam#c3679 Excellentp post! Comment spam is likely the bane of every blogger. The only way I know how to deal with it effectively is to use comment moderation followed by using my gut feeling. The alternative is turning off comments which effectively cuts communication between you and your readers. Comment moderation is the lesser of two evils. Sometimes a spammer comes along and leaves the same comment on all 5 of my blogs. The first time I'm tolerant, the second time a bit angry and the third time I take action as one unfortunate spammer found out. The thing is being able to leave a comment on someone's blog is a privilege not a right. I've done the same thing Kirsten has and on one occasion openly mocked a spammer - politely but still mocking. The problem is some bloggers have read where leaving comments is a good way to get backlinks to improve the coveted PR. IMO if a blog has any PR at all you are doing something right. Forget PR and just blog! The quality comments are always appreciated but the comments just for the backlink aren't if you know what I mean. I ended up in my own spam queue! My new blogs don't get many comments yet but I check each one and click the url to check it. Some comments do end up in the spam queue and do not deserve to me...like me! lol Thu, 27 Aug 2009 03:45:31 +0000 10 tips for identifying blog comment spam http://www.toptenblogtips.com/10-tips-for-identifying-blog-comment-spam#c3677 http://www.toptenblogtips.com/10-tips-for-identifying-blog-comment-spam#c3677 Brilliant post! I think I am going to make this post my homepage to help me deal with some of the beauts I get on my blog lately. I'm getting more comfortable with simply clicking on that nice dustbin shaped icon lately. If a comment itsself seems innocent enough, but links to a spam site, I just edit the comment to take out the url. Sometimes I change the name as well, so "Chicago Weddings" becomes "Sue" (I always base that on what else is in the comment, though. I don't get very much spam at all, so I must be doing something right! It may either be from the post itself, or from the comments field, and sometimes it even shares the same name as a previously approved commenter. Either way the URL is different, and usually spammy.
